The Sahara Restaurant, in Courtenay Place around the corner, was great value and had some good vegetarian options. Drinks were inexpensive and the food not pricey. |

We took the suburban train to Paraparaumu intending to visit Kapiti Island (requires permits and some planning) but the weather counted us out. We visited the Electric Tramway nearby (by taxi) and this was great, taking a 75 Y O tram to the beach. It is a lovely area with a hostel by the beach. |

Not exactly budget, (but a lovely place to spend my birthday), was cozy desert bar Strawberry Fare just north of the YHA. Noodle Canteen on Courtney Place was cheap, yet tasty and filling pan-Asian. |
