HI Hostel Tarabuco - HI Cej-Tarabuco

The new HI Tarabuco gives travelers the opportunity to immerse in the ancient indigenous Culture of Tarabuco, rather than just superficially experiencing it on a short visit to the famous Sunday market! An old, completely remodeled colonial building, the HI features traditional characteristics like a grand, light-flooded patio, a well and a rustic clay oven, as well as modern amenities like hot water 24/7 and beds especially tailored to comfortably fit even the tallest travelers. The hostel is run by Balbino, a kind old man from a village community near Tarabuco, and his wife Martha. While Martha cooks delicious local dishes for her guests, Balbino will be only too happy to show travelers around, explain the local culture, teach a few basics of the Andes’ most-spoken indigenous language Quechua, organize a Pujllay demonstration (local dance) or take you to rural communities where people still live exactly the same way their ancestors used to 500 years ago. Augustina, an indigenous lady who lives within the HI premises, works in the patio weaving the famous textiles that can be bought on the traditional Sunday market and will be happy to demonstrate how the same are produced. From Tarabuco one can undertake fascinating trips to Icla (30kms), where Balbino can take you virtually unknown sites with fossils and remains of ancient cultures, such as painted pre-Colombian ceramics; furthermore there are spectacular canyons and a waterfall to be discovered. Tours can be booked with Juan-Carlos at the HI in Sucre, located in Calle Guillermo Loayza Nª 119, Tel. 6457217 (hi.tours@yahoo.com). | more......
