I rode up to Kerid crater, but this is on the Golden Circle route, so makes a great stop after Gullfoss on your way to Reykjanes Peninsula (take the southern road to Grindavik - it's brand new) |

16 Sep 2011 Anne, Scotland:
We headed to Akureyri via the F35 mountain road. This road is probably only usable to tourists from about June onwards and local advice should always be sought regarding the road condition however we had a great trip in a normal car. There are no fords as all waterways are now bridged. It is very rough from Gulfoss to the Koldur area and Selfoss to Akureyri can take 7 - 9 hours. It's well worth it. Especially a dip in the hot springs in Koldur. |

HI Hostel SelfossBreakfast is available for 1.300 ISK pr person. (€8) Selfoss is a lovely town of around 8000 inhabitants situated in the south of Iceland. It is conveniently located by road no. 1, a perfect stop for those who are travelling inland to Gullfoss and Geysir or the highlands, for those who want to explore the south shore or those continuing onwards on the main road. The municipal swimming pool is great, with several hot tubs, sauna and a slide. The town is on the banks of Ölfusá river and an evening walk on the riverbanks is a great idea, and if you are into golf there is a nice 9 hole course on the outskirts of town. Mt Ingólfsfjall is close by and makes for a good hike, you will be rewarded with a magnificent view over the plains of South Iceland to the mountains to the north and east and all the way to the Westman Islands off the coast. In town you can also visit the Art Museum and the church which has beautiful stained glass windows. Selfoss Hostel is in an old remodelled house in the centre of town. It has 1-4 persons rooms with and without private facilities, well equipped guest kitchen, laundromat for guests. The patio is a great place to sit down and relax with a nice cup of coffee and write those postcards. Breakfast is served at the Hostel, you can also purchase a take-away lunchbox and coffee and cakes at the Hostel’s café. The receptionists are a fountain of knowledge and can assist you with your questions, as well as booking daytours in the area.
