Just wandering around at night in Salerno is beautiful. Beware everything closes between 1 and 5pm and then reopens from 5 - 10pm. Don't plan to shop in the mid afternoon.

Pompei is a 25 min train trip from Salerno. Cheap train tickets available at the train station. Closer than Sorrento or Naples.

Amalfi coast. We actually just used Salerno as a jumping off point. The Amalfi coast is an easy bus ride from Salerno. You just have to jump on the SITA bus from the town, a few blocks from the hostel. I recommend getting the 6 euro all day pass so that you can just hop on and off at the towns you want to visit. Minori has a nice beach, and try the lemon sorbetto in Amalfi....it's to die for! As for Capri, it was a challenge to find where the boat leaves from in Salerno, and really, I didn't think Capri was worth it. Far to many tourists, far too expensive, and the island has lost the charm I'm sure it once possessed.
