Don't go out alone. Rio is not as bad as you may have heard, but you definitely need to be cautious after dark and in certain neighborhood. Going out should be fine, as long as you're with a group.
For great nightlife try... 21 Dec 2010 Monica, Venezuela:
Lapa, specially on Friday nights. Lapa gives you the option of many many theme restaurants/bars, where you could have a good dinner, go for a drink or go dancing whatever music you like. You can do everything on the same night. Lapa is open every single night, and on Friday night is amaizing! they close the streets and it is an amaizing party. Lapa takes credit cards. On Saturday nights you can go to a rehersal of Carnival, I went to Mangueira Samba School and it was such a beautiful show to see. Mangueira is in a favela, so take a taxi from your hotel to the main gate of the school and then when you are finished take a yellow cab on the main gate of the school, they don't take credit cards so bring cash, you have to pay around $18 to come in. Ipanema and Leblond also have nice places to go for a drink and they all take credit cards. ATM works until 10pm so get your cash during the day. What is an ATM for us, it is not in Brazil. You will find ATM in gas stations.
