Having only been there for one evening I couldn't really comment, other than to say beer is damned expensive so watch out!

Nice was lovely if you're just up for relaxing- it'll take six hours to get there by TGV from Gare de l'Est- the reservation for which is only 9 euros with an interrail pass.
