Montmartre and St. Michel areas in Paris itself. Loads of eateries of all descriptions keep prices reasonable. Both easy to get to by metro or the new Vélib cycle hire scheme (nearest Vélib point is less than 2km away, near Porte de Clichy). Nearer the hostel, Clichy is quieter with a few reasonable restaurants within easy walking distance - but they tend to take last orders at 9pm. Most of these are on or near Boulevard Jean Jaurès, which runs parallel to Rue Martre (where the hostel is).
