If you like art you must go to the Prado art gallery. It's very big so you'd need to set aside a few hours to see everything without rushing. Also I'd recommend being at the Royal Palace to watch the changing of the guard - it isn't as impressive as the changing of the guard in London, but you are closer to the action in Madrid!

good hostel in valencia near the historic part of town 20 minutes walk from bus station just ask for the torres de serrano.

buy local foods from nearby grocers, and there is a little restaurant near the hostel. I also had a cheap lunch at a bodega around Tribunal.

Puerta del Sol (take the metro line 3) and walk to Atocha, it's a very enjoyable walk. Around the hostel there is a park. Bought a film on DVD in Spanish, and a book too.

Didn't stay for very long. Check out Plaza de Castilla very modern, the House of Deputies near the Prado, and the Botanical Gardens. If you need rolls of films and other stuff like that, go to the shops at Atocha station.
