Walk round the city walls, and picnic in the shade on a grassy tower top. We came just too early, but the Puccini house museum is about to re-open after several years (September 2011), and we will try to come back for that. |

The pizza place opposite the HI entrance and the best foccacia, made to measure in front of your eyes at Rocchi P's Pizzicheria la Grotta. You'll see it en route from the hostel to the anfiteatro and it opens on to the anfiteatro piazza. |

HI Hostel Lucca - San FredianoVisitors to Lucca will never forget the spectacle of its city walls within which times has preserved images to delight the eyes. This city with its 22 centuries of history is indeed one of Italy's most evocative destinations. The new Youth Hostel is near the Church of S. Frediano, in the city centre. There are two monthly dates not to forget: an antiques market ( 3rd Sunday of each month ) and a local artisan's market ( 4th Sunday ). From Lucca you can make excursions to the Garfagnana Region, Barga, Castelvecchio, to the thermae of Bagni di Lucca, to the wonderful bridges ( the Bridge of the Chains and the Devil's Bridge ), to the Serchio Valley and why not ?
