I stuck mostly to the 7/11's, Lawson's and other convenience stores which serve a variety of meals which they offer to microwave for you as well as serving various snacks. All of which are quite tasty and although there are many decent restaurants, I preferred to keep costs down and it suited my purposes. |

there are many bars and restaurants and the Kyoto Nightlife shop will offer booklets on various places, where they are (including map coordinates), and allows you to choose your own preferences. Personally, I found a great 50's/60's bar in which there was a live band which was absolutely excellent, the bar was called Grease and every night I was able, I went to visit them for 3,000 yen entry fee and free drinks all night and an average 800 yen for a meal (which, their meals were excellent) it was also cost effective and I enjoyed every night I visited and they made me feel welcome from the word go, it was absolutely fantastic. |

The vast number of shrines and temples allow for a new place to go each and every day (although I cannot remember any of the temple names or shrine names because of an inability to read any Japanese although I did try), Kyoto zoo was also very interesting even though I couldn't read the information about the animals but it was great to just switch off the mind for a while and enjoy the simple things of just seeing creatures from all over the world and how they all have different characteristics. And if you don't want to go there then there's plenty of countryside in which you can lose yourself in because the mountains are very beautiful and the views from the top are quite sensational. there is also the shopping central in which the expensive shops are, I don't know much about that area as it looked like the kind of place where you'd pay to walk through the streets and so i felt self-conscious because I really hadn't been able to wash up that well and I was the only person in that district whose trousers were falling apart but if you maintain well dressed then it would be quite a nice place to visit. |

I found that all of the walking around shrines and temples left me with a feeling of recognition and acceptance so I would advise that Kyoto not be the last place you visit otherwise you may not be willing to return home so I would advise somewhere quite busy and bustling like Osaka or Tokyo because anywhere else would be too comfortable to willingly leave behind, preferably Osaka because it is the most uncomfortable place to walk around in, absolutely spectacular scenery and some of the most brilliant sights I've ever seen but the general mood of the people you meet in the streets can be oppressive unless you ignore the majority of them because if you bow in their direction in a manner that is deemed polite they stare at you as if you were from Mars. I found it much easier to leave Osaka than Kyoto |

Maccas is on the corner. There are some great Noodle bars down the main drag that are cheap and leaves you feeling warm and full, or street vendors are cheapest. |

The curfew is 10.30pm so that puts paid to any nightlife but they have dinner early and the markets and there is plenty of activity happening on the streets to interests you. |
