Fish soup in Kauppahalli (once inside, choose the left coridor and find the small resaurant with a menu in the form of a string of sheets). Glogi (hot wine with raisins and almonds), reindeer salad or Lappish cheese recomnended as well. Food stand (mostly with fish) at Kauppatori are a good opton for a quick and tasty lunch, especially in warmer months. Cinnamon buns (korvapuusti pulla) in any cafe (be aware though that the Finnish coffee is of a characteristic taste, rarely appreciated by those accustomed to more delicate flavours :) |

For the less known attractions, check the Finnish National Library (opposite to the west entrace to the cathedral). Free admission and you can browse through shelves with 300-year old treasures :) |

The hostel is a convenient place for those going by ferries to Stockholm, the Aland Islands or St Petersburg. Ferry terminals are nearby (although you have to take a smaller ferry to the city center at first). |

I didn't research places to eat on Suomenlinna before I went, so I just stepped into the little restaurant immediately outside of the ferry stop. The place was charming but very expensive. I just opted for black tea and a cheese plate. Just that was almost $20. If you're on a budget, you might want to look into cheaper options before you go. If you're comfortable spending more, though, that little restaurant is a good spot! |

Elite, slightly north of the city centre, is a fantastic restaurant with reasonable prices, with interior intact since they opened in the 1930s. The fried fish in the market square, next to the ferry to Soumenlinna, is basic but great. On Suomenlinna there is a super-nice café on the island south of the hostel. I forget the name but walk past the main museum and across the bridge and then right along the canal toward the shipyard. You will be passing Café Chapman but it's the next one I mean. They have a mean soup and homebaked bread. Also a public sauna, open evenings. |

For beautiful nature you should go to Puumala or some other pretty place on lake Saimaa. In wintertime try Tampere. For a more beatiful Scandinavian city, take the ferry to Stockholm! |

| HI Hostel Helsinki - Hostel SuomenlinnaDie Jugendherberge Suomenlinna ist ideal für Leute, die das Besondere suchen. Sie ist in einer ehemaligen Grundschule untergebracht und liegt in der alten Inselfestung Suomenlinna auf Iso Mustasaari (UNESCO-Welterbe) direkt am Fährterminal. Die Fähre ab Marktplatz nach Suomenlinna braucht nur 15 Minuten und kostet nicht mehr als andere öffentliche Verkehrsmittel. Die Fähre verkehrt bis 02:00 Uhr. Wir verfügen über 2- und 3-Bettzimmer sowie größere Gemeinschaftszimmer. Weiterhin haben wir Gemeinschaftsbereiche, Küche und Speisesaal im Obergeschoss und Aufenthaltsraum im Erdgeschoss. Neben Unterkunft bieten wir auch Catering und Service für Konferenzen und andere Veranstaltungen an. Wir verfügen außerdem über alle modernen Einrichtungen wie Computer für unsere Gäste und WLAN. Die Jugendherberge gehört der Organisation finnischer Jugendzentren (Suomen Nuorisokeskukset ry) an. Wer unsere Dienste in Anspruch nimmt, fördert damit gleichzeitig die Kinder- und Jugendarbeit. Die Hauptaufgaben der nationalen Jugendzentren sind die Unterstützung von Lehrern und Ausbildern sowie die Förderung nationaler und internationaler Jugendaktivitäten. Wir bieten auch Ermäßigungen für Inhaber der Euro26-Karte an. Unsere Jugendpreise gelten für Gruppen ab fünf Personen bis zu 28 Jahren.
