I highly recommend the $21 to $25 bus trip to New York City: DC to NY. I highly recommend the following hi Hostels: Santa Monica (1 block from the beach), Los Angeles, CA; Seattle (a fish throw below from Pike's market); WA; San Francisco (3 hostels, I usually stay at the one closest to Powell Street, so I can use a 3-day BART pass on the cable cars), San Francisco, CA; University of Hawaii (1/2 block from the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus), Honolulu, HI; Waikiki Hostel (right in the heart/intersection of Waikiki at Kaiulani and Kuhio streets); Honolulu, HI. There is a big Safeways around the corner (about 15 min walk) on New York street - great selection of food for self-catering. I also liked the Johnny Rocketts Diner place in Georgetown - tasty burgers and in an American-style diner! |

Le Pain at the corner of 10th and F Streets, NW, is open early all weekend for breakfast and take-aways. Affordable, nutritious and tasty. Cool rest stop in the summer heat. (Pret-a-Manger was closed for breakfast on weekends) |

Do the Hop On Hop Off bus tour and go all the way round once, then decide which places you want to go back to. The museums are a great way to cool off when it's 93 degrees outside! |

Tai Shan Chinese restaurant in Chinatown on H street just east of 7th had really cheap food, very good quality, maybe not the dumplings though. |
