There's Granville Island which is a short distance away. About a 5/10 minute walk then a 5 minute ferry which is cheap then the island sells lots of good fresh produce in abundance of varieties.

The Nesters market is just a block away, sells really good food. Plenty of restaurants, cafes on practically every street. Marketplace a few blocks away sells food at cheaper prices and is local.

Personally not went out to any bars but there's hundreds of them nearby. There's even one (or two?) across the road from the hostel.
