I know that people taking beds that were not assigned to them creates havoc with your system. Maybe you need to have someone escort new arrivals to their rooms and point out their beds and lockers to them, or else explain the consequences of taking the wrong bed and locker at the desk.

I know your staff tries really hard to make things right, but I must have been in the wrong place at the wrong time on this visit.

Another inconvenience was that I then had to change rooms after my second night, even though I had made my reservation over a week before. Manny at the front desk assigned me a bed in a premium room, because of all the hassle that had ensued at check in the day before, but when I returned that evening to complete registration and get my room card, I was told that I had been assigned to the wrong room (I think it was all-male premium) and that I would need to be assigned to another room. At this point, I just wanted a bed to go to sleep. All total, this was the most difficult experience with check-in I've ever had at the NYC hostel, even though I appreciated the free storage I was given during the day between changing rooms. The gal at the front desk with whom I dealt on this last round also did everything she could to compensate, i.e., offering me free storage for the following day between when I checked out and when I left NYC to return home, free breakfast (which I declined, since I was meeting a friend for breakfast the next day), or flip flops (which I happily accepted!)
