There is an old cinema downtown that shows foreign films. Looked worth a shot. Downtown has a few clubs going, and though I didn't visit any of them, sounds like they have some pretty good local bands. Weekends are lively downtown.

Point Lobos, Big Sur, Downtown Monterey and the beaches. Get familiar with the Monterey Salinas Transit (MST) system if you don't have a car. It's cheap, on time, and goes just about everywhere.

Santa Cruz or San Francisco heading north, Big Sur or San Luis Obispo heading south. Unless you are in a hurry, take Highway One. This is one of the most scenic coastal drives in the entire state.
