Davenport, a great artist community with a good bakery, then Santa Cruz, then Monterrey then the 17-mile drive and Carmel. Don't miss the Carmel Mission and then stop 12 miles south on HWY 1 at Rocky Point--most incredible views. |

There was a roadside mexican cafe about a quarter mile on Highway 1 from the property heading south. It is on the right side of the road; it may look a little rough but the food was good and we noticed a lot of locals coming for takeout. |

Buy crabs on the docks and cook them yourself at the hostel. Crabs for five were less than $40. |

HI Hostel Montara - Point Montara LighthouseOn the rugged California coast, 25 miles south of San Francisco, historic 1875 fog signal station and lighthouse have been preserved and restored by HI-AYH and the California Department of Parks and Recreation, in cooperation with the Coast Guard. Explore the coastline; watch annual gray whale migration (Nov-April). Visit the nearby James Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, a four-mile stretch of tide pools full of starfish, crabs, mussels, abalone, and sea anemones.
