If you're feeling fancy, Fulton's on the River has good happy hour specials (unbelievable food at moderate prices). In the DePaul area, NESH has great Mediterranean and Bourgeois Pig has fantastic sandwiches. Flat Top just north of the hostel is good value for students, especially for lunch. You can also find good lunch options at Chicago French Market across the river to the West in Ogilvie Transportation Center.

For the gays and gay friendly, Boystown is an essential spot to visit, especially Sidetrack for showtunes Monday, Friday and Sunday nights, and Berlin and Hydrate for dancing. Revolution in Logan Square has terrific microbrews.

Dairy Queen next door is very reasonable, and they have one of the best Cuban restaurants/coffee places that I have ever seen. The menu is amazing.
