The supermarkets in Cambridge (which is about 10 min. from Boston Hi-Hostel by metro) are a good source of alimentation. You can eat well and not be ruined. I found one on Broadway street, near the Harvard campus.

Allston/Brighton had some great bars, and the area around Central Station on the Red Line did as well. They tended to be of the dive/hipster variety, which is what I'm in to.

HI-Fenway hostel is open from June to August, located on the campus of Boston University, in the heart of the city. The Charles River, Fenway Park (and its baseball games) and famous Newbury Street are all nearby.
