One of my favorite places to go became "Spider House" which was about a 15 minute drive from the hostel. Patio, bar, coffee house. Great ambiance, great people, and usually live music!

There's a Mexican place called Taquerias Arandinas - walk directly across the street from the hostel, follow the road there (tinnin ford rd). It's a couple blocks down, on your left. Really, really good, and cheap.

Austin is a good town to go see live music - they have a whiteboard in the hostel where they list some events that are going on each day. Check some of them out! Also be sure to try some tex-mex barbeque (I went to Ironworks, it was good).
