The breakfast in the hostel was very good, not just a roll and coffee. The hostel's dinner was an excellent value. It is also a great chance to meet other guests and learn about sights, restaurants, and other local information.

Be sure to stop at the Office de la Haute Montagne, across the square from the Tourist Information office, in the center of town. They have a wealth of information about the area and scheduled activities for young and old.

The burger/sandwich cafes in Chamonix do really nice low-priced food in comparison to the more expensive restaurants nearby. There is one called Mojo café which is particularly nice.

The Aiguille du Midi. A cable car takes you from Chamonix (roughly 1km above sea level) to the Aiguille du Midi, 3.8km. The views are utterly spectacular, like nothing I've ever seen. Go as early in the morning as you can bear to get up.
