Not budget, but Madame Carcas was very tasty and close - specialising in pork
For great nightlife try... 26 Oct 2011 Chris, England & Wales:
Have a drink in the main square just round the corner from the hostel.
Don't miss... 26 Oct 2011 Chris, England & Wales:
Obviously, the Cite! But worth a walk down to the town for a coffee in the square and a stroll or boat trip up the Canal du Midi
For good eats check out... 12 Oct 2011 Jeremy, England & Wales:
You can get a meal out for under 20 euros at a number of restaurants in the square around the corner. If you are cooking your own food it may be worth shopping before you arrive to save walking out of the old city again.
Don't miss... 12 Oct 2011 Jeremy, England & Wales:
Castle Keep - just around the corner from the hostel. 8.50 euros. Go early in the day because there may be one English speaking tour at some point and you can always come back later with the same ticket. Self guided tour of the keep. Walk the walls from the keep courtyard clockwise on your own to the main gate. Walk the walls anti-clockwise from the keep courtyard to the Basilica (like a cathedral) by tour only. Visit the cathedral too. The light is good early in the morning I found. Just wonder around the outer walls, take lots of photos or take a book and relax somewhere.
12 Oct 2011 Jeremy, England & Wales:
I hired a car and went to Montsegur (Cathar castle) and to the prehistoric caves at Niaux (advanced booking required - very limited numbers) but it would be very difficult to reach these places without a car I think. Definitely try and visit one of the Cathar castles if you can.
For great nightlife try... 12 Oct 2011 Jeremy, England & Wales:
Not that type of location, some others headed down to the new city across the river for nightlife - not sure how successful that was!
For good eats check out... 25 Sep 2011 Catherine, England & Wales:
We did not eat at the restaurants as it was expensive within the Cite Medieval.
25 Sep 2011 Catherine, England & Wales:
Forget Narbonne and Sete, go to Montpellier.
For good eats check out... 16 Sep 2011 Tania, England & Wales:
The Carcassonne card/pass gives you free aperitifs at a list of restaurants. The restaurants are around Eur15 for a set 3-course meal.
