Tiananmen, of course. Gugong, Tiantan and the Great Wall. We went to Badaling by ourselves which was not so difficult if you know some Mandarin. The bus costs us Yuan 12 per trip and even cheaper when paid by IC card (purchasable at any subway station but can be refunded only at some stations including the airport)
For great nightlife try... 17 Mar 2011 Wansaree, Thailand:
Wangfujing street which is about a 10-minute walk. We checked out the Silk Market but got nothing from there. Xidan is also not so far but again we didn't get anything but a meal.

The main attractions but try to go to some local less common places as well. Juist grab a taxi point at some pace on the map and just experience. Try out local busses it costs (almost)nothing and is fun.
