If travelling round china I would recommend Nihao Tours for booking trains- they take a percentage charge but well worth it to ensure you get soft sleepers. Pingyao is a really nice old town with loads of temples. The terracotta warriors in Xian. The chinese sex museum in Shanghai. The Li River cruise in Guilin. Ocean park (esp the mine train ride) in Hong Kong. |

Check out the Harmony Guesthouse in Pingyao--a beautiful, cheap courtyard hotel with very friendly, helpful owners in a delightful traditional Chinese city. It's really a breath of fresh air after a few days in Beijing! |

If you want to walk to Tien An Men Square turn right just outside of the hostel entrance and you only need to walk about 15 minutes to get there. I got lost the first time when I followed the map on the back of the business card - its MUCH faster by going right. |

Street vendors! For the equivelent of 40 cents US, you can get a lamb cabob or a variety of other options. The ceiling for most stalls approached a dollar. Another great option is the bakeries. |

08 Jun 2008 Ben, USA:
Check out the acrobats in Beijing. We saw something sort of like a ballet. This can be awkward if it is two guys who think that they are going somewhere to see a bunch of crazy acrobatic moves. HOwever, it actually was quite good, and we both ended up enjoying it. |

08 Jun 2008 Ben, USA:
Temple of Heaven, Forbidden city, summer palace...get a travel book. It has a list. Just be prepaired for some cultural degradation with all of the souvenir shops. |

I had my breakfast everyday at a shop just round the corner. The soya bean milk and fried dough etc are really nice. Most day I spent 3 - 5 yuan for breakfast. |

I recommend both the traditional Beijing Opera and the acrobatics shows offered by the Hostel. Both very impressive and entertaining shows and take place just a few blocks away from the hostels. |
