I have a friend who works in Beijing and she took me to some good places. Mostly I tried the 小吃 (snacks) on offer. I cannot recall how to describe these in Chinese - but try the food vendors sell. Try to avoid the less hygienic-looking vendors, but there are a lot of decent ones, serving delicious food for a pittance. |

I only had two nights in Beijing. The first one I was jet-lagged and exhausted, and a tad ill. My second night I went to Houhai - it is sadly very western, but there are some nice clubs, if this is your thing, and I went boating on a pedalo on the lake at night - very nice. Prices of drinks in the bars here are a bit high though. |

I am going to return to Beijing shortly, but the places I visited and enjoyed the most were Olympic Green (the site of the 2008 Olympics) - it's pretty awesome. The Water Cube and the Bird's Nest are stunning. You can go on a tour of the Bird's Nest, though I had not the time. |

I headed to Xi'an next, on an overnight train. It's alright, but be sure to get a soft sleeper - for (relative) comfort and security I would advise other traveller's to use this option. |

Street food on a stick where they charge you by the stick. Three of us ate well for less than 10 yuan. We looked for freshly cooked and never got sick! Also try the yogurt drinks in the little crocks with the foil labels- delicious. |

a night at watching the Chinese Acrobats. Walk along the river along the edge of the hutong at sunset and see the old men and boys swimming. |

24 Aug 2011 Lynne, USA:
The Bell and Drum Towers at the end of the day after the tours have gone. The tea ceremony is included with only a soft sell at the gift store afterwards. |
