Whole Foods grocery is about 3/4 miles away and has not only a great food buffet and grill, it is also an organic grocery store, so you can bring groceries back to the hostel to cook your own meals and save a bunch of money. China town is also just a couple blocks away, with great asian food options. |

I've also stayed at HI in NYC. Equally great place to stay, and Megabus is an awesome, affordable way to get from DC to NYC. |
