We went to Geirangerford from Alesund through the hurtigruten cruise and returned to Alesund through the Ford1 bus service. It was a awesome experience.

Clim up the sugar loaf mountain - it only takes a few hours and is worth the spectacular views from the top

Definitely climb up for the Aksla view (its right next to the hostel and) it's stunning! Also Fjord1 do a tour on coach and ferry from Alesund bus station to the Geirangerfjord! It's a whole day tour and the round trip costs just over £60 - well worth it!

As Norway is very expensive the best thing you can do is going to the supermarquets around the HI and cook in the small kitchen of the hostel.

There is no nightlife in Alesund. It's a lovely, quiet, calm and small city.

you can go easyly to Hellesylt and Geiranger from Alesund or have an overnight trip with Hurtigruten ship to Bergen

We ate at Egons a pub with excellent choice of food and thoroughly tasty, reasonably priced. A little more money we ate at C&C but it was very good indeed and cooked in front of you while you waited.

I think there was nightlife but we were too tired to go in search after a day's sightseeing.

We chose to do the Geirangfjord Fjord1bussmore trip for the day which we thoroughly enjoyed. Sunny weather too but the boat down the fjord was packed so photography was tricky.
