We bought a few groceries at Monoprix and cooked for ourselves. It was a HUGE moneysaver. That's the great thing about hostels; having a fully-equipped kitchen was invaluable.

if you are buying from a supermarket, avoid the monoprix in the centre and use the ones further out

Nice walking around the town centre, near the waterfront, though remember the mosquito spray as they're a dime a dozen down there.

There's Geneva to the north, if you're coming from the north go to the Alps (La Route De La Grande Alps is very much recommended if you have a car) and even the pyrennees to the south-west if you fancy some more mountain driving/hiking. Really beautiful area of France.

no so much on the nightlife unfortunately in anncecy but the hostel does have a bar with things on on different nights and a pool table

HI Hostel Annecy

Welcome to Annecy - The little Venice of the Alps. In summer as well as in winter, whether you want to relax or to spend a sports stay, Annecy is the appropriate place. You'll find 4 / 5 bedded rooms with en-suite shower and washbasin, free Wi-Fi access, a fully equipped kitchen, 2 outside terraces where you can make BBQs, and our snack-bar opening at 18:00hr. Winter fun: The Ski area: Beginner skiers and families will find what they are looking for just 20 minutes from Annecy at Semnoz, a ski area with mainly green and blue slopes. More seasoned skiers can easily get to La Clusaz. Those who prefer Nordic skiing and snowshoe fans can take the marked trails to fulfil their passion. The Slopes: Semmoz ski area – Shuttles from the Annecy station. Downhill skiing, 18 slopes (18 km) including 6 red, 5 blue and 7 green.
