walking up the volcano... I am not a great fan of walking but this was really worth it. The view from the top and just generally being on the volcano was awesome and when you find the hot spot where apparently you can toast bread from the heat from the rock you wont want to leave!

We went to the restaurant across the street and they have great pizza. We went to a few bakeries as well and the donuts were fantastic. Konan is the grocery store and the prices are very reasonable. In fact some of the items were cheaper there than at Bonus.

HI Hostel Vestmannaeyjar

Las islas de Westman son un grupo de entre 15 y 18 islas. La más grande es Heimaey, que es la única habitada con una población de 4.400 habitantes. Los isleños tienen su propia cultura tradicional, como caza de aves, recolección de huevos y rappel en los acantilados. En enero de 1973, hubo una erupción volcánica en Heimaey, que duró hasta principios de julio. Las cenizas arruinaron y enterraron casi 400 edificios. Poco después de que finalizaran las erupciones, entre 2.000 y 5.300 personas que habían vivido en Heimaey antes de este desastre natural, regresaron. Los restos de la erupción son uno de los lugares históricos más interesantes de la isla. Para celebrar que han pasado 30 años desde la erupción, se ha creado un proyecto en el norte que se llama Pompey y que trata de salvar las ruinas de la erupción y de hacerlas más accesibles, incluidas las excavaciones de entre 7 y 10 casas que desaparecieron bajos las cenizas. Se pueden realizar numerosas actividades en Heimaey: vela alrededor de la isla, observación de aves, golf, senderismo, equitación, museos, natación, avistar ballenas, etc. El albergue se encuentra en el centro de la ciudad y todos los servicios están cerca.
