I went to Varna next and enjoyed walks along the Black Sea. The Thracian and Roman archaeology portion of the Varna Archaeology Museum was closed for "repairs." |

Hard to find but my choice is Bulgaria fast food places. I preferred to keep walking past all the many McDonald places and look for local restaurants. I even avoided the many Italian restaurants. The Bulgarian fast foods will have a display of roasting chickens and also, at least a yard long plus, vertical staff with roasting meat that's sliced vertically with a really BIG knife. Served on flat bread with vegetables. I obtained only veggies with yogurt....very good. Of course, there is always pizza,not particularly good but filling and cheap. I also bought vegetables and fruit at bazars, veggie stores, or mini and super markets. The cheeses are great but the bread is not. The salads are different but very enjoyable. Really enjoyed breakfast of sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, black and green olives and Bulgarian cheeses. Very filling and will keep you till late afternoon. |

Don't miss the Plovdiv archaeology museum (no pictures permitted). I was told of an English language lecture at the University at that time but did not have time to attend. I think the museum might have this information. The local tourist information center is right next door to the Plovdiv Guesthouse. It is, however, really easy to go down Saborna street and drop right down into the historic area around the beautiful Mosque. Don't deny yourself the pleasure of rambles into Plovidv's non tourist neighborhoods. Walk around the historical "Three Hills" butte where the hostel is located. There's plenty to see with the Roman amphitheater being the most spectacular. You'll be outraged at the graffiti defacing the Tracian ruins and all the houses, historic and newly built. Don't miss the two art museums with historic and modern Bulgarian paintings. |
