Aya Sofia, Blue Mosque, Grand Bazzar, walk down the major street(in both directions) alongside the 'tram line'. Walking down the hill, you reach the harbour (EMINONU-the old historical part of city), and find bargains on boat cruises. Eg. instead of paying 60+ euros for a 2 hour boat cruise on Bosphorus, you only pay 12 Turkish lira!! (people walk outside the ticket machines offering such trips). Also, if you buy a token for 1.75 Turkish Lira, you hop on a boat and can travel in any direction over the Bosphorus to other parts of Istanbul. Beware which boat you take,as you can't use tokens from 1 company line on another's boats. Also, some lines finish up early(around 8pm). You can always walk over the Galata bridge to get back to Eminonu. Never leave your accomodation without a map. People are usually friendly, and most speak some English-especially shop/stall keepers. |

If you get fed up with eating surrounded by smoke from cigarettes and sheesha then near the hostel is Rumist, where you can get a good bowl of soup with nice bread for 4TL, a kebab meal from 10TL; good portion sizes very filling. Inside is smoke free. All the staff here are very friendly and it is a pleasant place to dine, the tea and coffee is good too. |

A cheap way to see Istanbul from the water is to catch one of the waterbuses from the quay, it only costs 1.75TL each way and they serve tea for 1TL, OJ 2TL onboard. |
