It's not very cheap but Umami at Union and Webster is a must for dessert. They have an amazing cookie dough roll. Also If you go early they do have a few items that are about half off.

Get a muni passport and a map and just ride the busses around, there's no need for a tour bus. Another fun thing to do is take the BART to Berkeley and walk down Telegraph street.

Little Star Pizza is amazing and is pretty affordable when split between several people. They have a couple of locations. Honey Honey Cafe & Crepery is only a few blocks from the hostel and does a tasty breakfast.
