Cinemas such as Avalon cinema in hawthorne have super cheap movie tickets (all the time not just on Tuesday's).

For breakfast, the Hawthorne Street Cafe--the man at the counter (the owner?) is so much fun!

First there is a Fred's Market down the street where there is tons of fresh produce. Organic too if you wish. I picked up breakfast food here for a very reasonable price (multi-grain cheerios and organic bananas which were cheap). The kitchen is set up that you can cook all of your meals if you like. Locally I really was fond of the Bagdad Cafe with reasonable dishes and good happy hour pricing. Cup & Saucer is another good option. Breakfast foods all day long available. I had the garden omelet which was a huge plate of food. There is a bowl of rice, beans, cheddar, salsa and sour cream for $8 that I had for a mid-day meal and left me so full that I just had a happy hour appetizer late that night. Also worth checking out are the smaller stalls -- Mexican, Caribbean and Polish. A number of other places to check out that appeared to have reasonably priced meals. Also, note that every place I went to or heard about had vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. Many had full menus for people who follow those dietary philosophies. In the hostel dining room there is a flyer that lists great places to eat too. Grab a copy. Also just take a left out of the hostel and go for a walk. You will pass so many places to dine that you'll have trouble making a choice!

Red and Black Cafe - not exactly budget but it has great vegan food

I was more into exploring the city all day long, so I tended to turn in come 11PM. But the Bagdad is good for beer and to watch the the life along SE Hawthorne (try the IPA they brew). The attached Bagdad Theater shows movies every evening and you can have a beer while watching. Downtown and the Old Town/China District are all heavy with bars, clubs, pubs and cafes so you shouldn't have any trouble finding a local band or artist performing. Ask around or check out the freebie papers (the hostel usually has these weeklies on hand) or look on the utility poles which are peppered with fliers in the SE district. I think each Thursday during the month there are art walks in different areas of the city that should be attended if you can. All kinds of art to see and drinks easy to come by. I was there for First Thursday and Happy, one of the great staff members, came by to take anyone who wanted to go take it in. I also liked Kell's Irish Pub in Old Town. Good happy hour, Irish music every night after 9 or so, good beer and not pricey. Also if you are a football fan (soccer) this is the place to catch that match you wanted to see. You'll be amongst fans.

Not sure...I came to immerse myself in and explore Portland with an eye to moving here. I left after ten days intending to be back soon as a resident. I heard the hostel up in Seattle and some in northern California are great to stay at.
