Surprisingly antofagasta is great. The guidebooks say to give it a miss but the Chilean people we met were incredibly friendly. There aren't many tourists there so the local people make you feel very welcome.

loved the paragliding. Also if you walk along beach to left if you´re looking at it as coming from hostel and walk out to the posh flats there is a small port where at the time was a load of sealions... very cute to watch. Don´t miss humberstone the ghost town... where else can you freely roam feeling like a kid through a shell of a town complete with theatre, pool, school etc. Really interesting - just get cab or collectivo out there and hitch bus back.

the place across the road from the hostel is great if you want a guacamole sandwich(it comes on everything) and you want service with a smile (the woman there is very very scary!)
