Aurora palace: not so cheap, but it's the best place to have dinner close to teh hostel, and the waitress is really nice as well!

Lots of concerts at old churches (ex. Karlskirche). The Haus der Musik museum (an absolute must) is open until 10 pm. The main shopping area near Stephansdom was still pretty lively at 10 pm or so. Going up the Riesenrad (ferris wheel) in the Prater at night gives a good view of the city and is easily accessible from the U-bahn.

Schloss Shoenbrunn-- it's the furthest out of the center of the palaces, but the coolest in my opinion. The National Library is also quite impressive if you like that sort of thing. Stopping at a coffee house and people watching or reading is also a must.
