Best idea is to buy food at grocery store and cook at the hostel. Hostel has great kitchen, and storage for food, and tables to eat at. |

Sitting on the hostel front porch swing is the best evening entertainment. I sit out there for hours, swinging, listening to crickets, and enjoying the farmlife. |

I stay at hostels all over the United States. Unfortunately, the 2nd hostel in Ohio (Peninsula) has closed permanently. Malabar Farm is the only hostel in Ohio, and there are none in Michigan where I live. The next closest hostel is in Chicago and I stay there very often. I love the Chicago hostel, 500 beds, free breakfast, free events every day, walking distance from Amtrak and right by the Art Institute. Best deal in Chicago! |

While staying at the Malabar Farm hostel, the best attraction is the short walk up to Louis Bromfield's estate. Take the house tour, and the wagon tour ($5 total), study the museum, enjoy the gift store. I've gone to several barn dances there, too. There are also a bunch of great hiking trails with detailed maps provided to follow. Amish country is wonderful. Amish country is only a 30 minute drive from Malabar Farm. The Amish village of Charm is great. Berlin has lots of shops but was pretty crowded, but still worth seeing for the shops. Try the delicious Amish restaurants including Grandma's Homestead Restaurant in Charm with amazing quiche, muffin and fruit platter. |

Hiking trails, touring the Big House, touring the working farm, seeing some locations where Shawshank Redemption was filmed, visiting Amish country (great cheese houses). Plus the Maple Syrup Festival in the spring and hiking in nearby Mohican State Park. |
