Either up to the Bay of Islands, Paihia is lovely and a good base, or over to Coromandel by ferry. Don't stay in Coromandel Town though, pass through there after seeing the scenic railway and stay in Whitianga instead.

Asian food court 'Food Alley', 9 Albert Street. Fantastic and very cheap food court with food from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, India etc. We had a very big and very delicious tofu and vegetable clay pot for $8. Great for vegetarian food.
