Take a train from Central Station up to Lago de Como (though thats not the name of the train station, ask the desk what station to stop at). Cheap to get to, Como is a beautiful village built into the hills around a Lake. The lake provides great views of other villages, and it is on the Swiss border so a lot of stores in the area speak several languages (Italian, French, and German... and English).

The National Science Museum is awesome. Also the standard places like the Duomo Cathedral (the inside and the roof), the places surrounding it, the Castello Sforzesco and the Giardini Pubblici are a must go.
