Sustainability projects in Nouvelle Zelande

YHA New Zealand really does ‘walk the talk’ when it comes to sustainability! YHA NZ is committed to reducing energy consumption by maximising energy efficiency and using green and renewable energy sources. Their current energy initiatives include using energy efficient light bulbs, insulated hot water cylinders where possible, using energy efficient heat pumps, installing solar hot water heating, installing double glazing and installing heat recovery systems. The following hostels are participating: YHA Te Anau, YHA Mt Cook, YHA Tekapo, YHA Wanaka, YHA Nelson, YHA Wellington City, YHA Auckland International and YHA Christchurch Central. YHA NZ is prioritising to reduce their direct CO² emissions and waste, and ensure the future building developments integrate green building technologies. YHA is working with Land Care Research to find ways to achieve a CEMARS™ certification. This is the Certified Emissions Measurement and Reduction Scheme, part of the carboNZero programme. They also take responsibility for the tonnes of organic waste their hostels generate each year. So far they have solutions for 50% of all their organic waste, with a goal of zero organic waste to landfill. All YHA owned hostels have clearly marked recycling facilities in the kitchens for plastics (1&2), glass, paper/cardboard, aluminium and tin. In some places they also have fluorescent tube recycling, used clothing collection, reuse of courier bags and even their membership cards are now made with recycled PVC! YHA NZ knows water is precious! They have therefore installed water saving devices in the toilets throughout the YHA hostel network, saving up to 12,000 litres of water per toilet! They have also installed low-flow showerheads in most of the YHA-owned hostels. As part of their commitment to sustainable development each YHA-owned hostel works with local environmental groups to make a difference in their own community. Over the years some fantastic partnerships have been made and great things have been achieved.
