Sustainability projects in Islande
HI Iceland has achieved a lot since their environmental policy was published in 1999. They have has been taking a leading role in sustainability in the tourism industry, and as a result of their efforts, both the HI Association and the Reykjavík Hostels have received the Icelandic Tourist Board Environmental Awards, in 2003 and 2010 respectively. The two gateway hostels in Reykjavik are certified by the Nordic eco label, The Swan, and therefore fulfill strict sustainability criteria. The Reykjavik hostels also work according to the HI-Quality Management System. The hostels that are particularly dedicated to sustainability are called Green Hostels (10 in total) and are specially labeled to make green choices easier for guests. They fulfill standards in sustainability that HI Iceland determines and supervises, with the professional support of a consulting agency who audits our hostels. They are diverse hostels with their own personality, but all have the same common goal - to care about the environment and to help visitors enjoy and experience nature and the surroundings. HI Iceland takes environmental education seriously. They hold environmental workshops for hosts and have a ‘green tips for travellers’ section on their national website. Guests who rent cars through the central booking office are provided with instructions about eco-driving, and all rental cars and other transport come from ISO 9000 and 14000 certified companies. They encourage all guests to use public transport as much as possible. In all hostels, they continually try to educate and inspire guests on how to reduce their impact on the environment, both while they stay in the hostel, and also for when they return home.
