SYHA is the original green tourism business! Environmental care has been part of their philosophy since SYHA was founded in 1931. They were the founding member of the VisitScotland Green Tourism Business Scheme for Hostels, and they have more awards within this scheme than any other organisation. Most of SYHA hostels now have achieved at least the bronze award, and more and more are achieving silver and gold awards each year. SYHA is committed to becoming a ‘greener’ association and in many hostels you will find excellent environmental practices. They aim to continually review their practices and pass on their ideas and achievements to others within the HI network. Some of SYHA‘s best practices, which can be sound within the Scottish hostels are; recycling as much waste as possible, including onsite composting. Encouraging guests to take home items, which are not recyclable locally, but can be commonly recycled in urban areas. They use low energy lighting where possible and keep windows closed when the heating is on. They also operate their laundry practices as efficiently as possible and increase energy efficiency by improvements to insulation, double glazing and solar panels. They aim to protect nature and wildlife by tree planting and sympathetic renovations / repairs minimize the hostels intrusion on the landscape. They also promote the local National Trust for Scotland and Scottish Natural Heritage facilities and create a wildlife and herb garden at the rear of some hostels. SYHA staff promotes the limited local public transport for guests to access the hostel by bus and train and provide excellent local knowledge on walks and best places to visit for guests.Click here to explore sustainable development projects in other countries worldwide.
