Sustainability projects in Israel
Ecological sustainability IYHA Israel, the youth hostel association of Israel, will introduce water savers in the hostels, collect and recycle air conditioning water, recycle grey water for toilet flushing and introduce water treatment and descaling systems. Designing and building greener hostels is one of the “newest” objectives of IYHA. This will include: providing spaces with natural light, efficient energy policy and insulation, water savings systems, renewable energy i.e. solar panels for heating water and using local building materials. In order to reduce the energy consumption, and also save money, IYHA have low power energy efficient lighting in rooms and public areas and energy saving systems installed. They are replacing split unit air conditioners with energy saving models, building control systems and replacing diesel and gas space heaters with heat pumps. Social sustainability The youth hostels in Israel offer educational programs that provide a fascinating and tangible experience specific to the geographic location and history of each hostel; adding an educational complement to their hospitality services. The food is local, traditional and seasonal, including a range of vegetables, fish and meat. Economical sustainability The management is very focused on the customer experience and this attitude is reflected right through the entire association, touching and motivating all the staff. The hospitality and quality of service are also remarkable and the hostels are certified by HI-Q. Many facilities for people with special needs are covered and also different infrastructures are found to facilitate the different needs of the customer such as swimming pools, basketball and volleyball sports. IYHA is financially independent and stable and fully involved in many environmental and social issues. The new budget will include important investments to improve their energy efficiency, as well as saving money by reducing energy consumption costs.
