Sustainability projects in England & Wales
YHA England & Wales have positioned environmental sustainability at the heart of their organisation, by incorporating it as one of their ‘SPIRIT’ key values: Sustainability, Passion, Innovation, Responsibility, Inclusivity and Trust. A key part of their strategy is the decision to increase the number of hostels accredited with the EU Eco Label, an exacting process which takes into account building performance (eg boiler efficiency and insulation) as well as day to day youth hostel management, including environmental action plans for the future. They currently have 3 hostels with the EU Eco Label, and plan to increase this number to 30 over the next 3 years. They also want to be more transparent about their Environmental performance, by publicising Environmental performance indicators, and regularly reporting on their progress in improving environmental sustainability. YHA England & Wales will set concrete targets to reduce energy consumption, and are addressing their impacts in terms of waste management and use of cleaning chemicals, for example by using more products accredited with the EU Eco Label. Perhaps most importantly, YHA will further develop their ability to have a positive effect on the environment and the way people think and act towards the world around them. For many of the young people who stay with us YHA offers their first experience of the countryside and nature, and by developing innovative environmental educational experiences they will continue to help ferment a lifelong love of the outdoors and desire to care for the environment.
