Sustainability projects in Belgium

Belgium LAJ has been focusing on sustainable development for a number of years now. The association began by sorting and recycling waste, and then organic breakfasts started to make an appearance in some Youth Hostels. Today LAJ uses organic, biodegradable or recycled materials in the majority of their publications and promotional items, and since 2009 have switched over to using entirely “green” electricity. They periodically organise staff training and ‘think-tank workshops’ so that each Youth Hostel can get involved and make further progress within the areas of sustainability. In 2011 all halogen bulbs will be replaced and tap water-flows (washbasins and showers) will be restricted, in line with the specific Eco-label and Green Key criteria, within each hostel. Energy audits will be conducted in order to best identify the points where action is required. In terms of specific hostel sustainable development projects, Malmedy and Liège Youth Hostels will be equipped with thermal solar panels, Bouillon Youth Hostel will be fully insulated and the boiler in Champlon and Tournai Youth Hostels will be replaced with a more energy-efficient one. Liège Youth Hostel aims to be exemplary in terms of energy savings, but also in the use of organic and ecological materials. The project includes the use of cellulose flakes to insulate the whole building combined with joinery work using FSC-approved eucalyptus. Using the same approach, Belgium LAJ has begun the renovation of Namur Youth Hostel. Particular attention will be given to ventilation, with an exchange for the recovery of energy (dual flow). These investments in energy savings will be supported with educational tools that will increase awareness among hostel guests; helping to reduce the amount of energy and water consumed.
