Breakfast on site was a bonus. I took a single room which was clean, comfortable and the WiFi access in the lounge is a bonus. Nice outlook too. Short walk from the subway for convenience.

Spacious and clean (enough) it was a breath of fresh air after Hong Kong. Metaphorically of course, real fresh air is hard to find in China! Its not really central, but then I am still not sure what in Guangzhou is and in any case it is a pleasant riverside location, close to the excellent metro and the ferry that brings you over to the old foreign quarter and to a market area that was the closest we found to the "old" Canton. Blog on wordpress ("Around the world without a clue") (well, unless you are actually in China when the Great Firewall will block you) and on flickr search for "Bass Tyrrell"

we have stayed at HI hostels in china before, and was somewhat disappointed with this one. nothing really wrong, i'd stay at it again, it just wasn't as great as others.

in the various descriptions a better small map would have been helpful-its a little further from the subway/metro as suggested. As it is near a tipical Chinese big-cty ''bar street'' a lot of beds seem to be taken by those not wanting to go home after a visit there-this does not always mix too well with travellers. But as most Chinese YHA-hostels: very clean, well organised, have good and ample info, etc.

Having arrived in GZ at 6am I got on a taxi and called the hostel to have them give directions to the driver, but the night shift staff didn't speak any English - and their explanations in Chinese didn't help the driver at all. When I finally found the hostel, I pointed this out to the guy at the desk who just got on his shift (and spoke English)and he answered "well, maybe you just arrived TOO early". No "sorry", no nothing. Was I supposed to feel guilty for having arrived too early? I thought that was a bit rude. Otherwise, the hostel is very well located (the nearby ferry takes you to the Shamian Dao in 5mins), on a very nice promenade, is in general clean and has a nice, spacious lobby. The price per bed is a bit high, tho (60y), when compared to similar hostels. But there's not many alternatives in GZ...

Excellent place for staying. Very good rooms and maintained very well. Bathrooms are clean too. beautiful promonade on Pearl river just outisde the hostel.

Rebecca, the manager, was extremely helpful and friendly. This hostel is a great place to stay.
