The only issue I had dealt with securing the room online and being able to use the same payment method once I arrived. My bed was reserved through the online deposit, however the staff are unable to access the payment method used online to complete the transaction. Can you post on your website ,before payment is authorized that the hostel will not accept third party credit cards? It would have made my trip less stressfull. (i had already given my third party the money, I just dont have a credit card,or a bank)

I only stayed one evening, and left in the morning before the front desk opened, so my interaction with staff was minimal. I enjoyed my stay, and have already recommended the Portland Hawthorne Hostel to others!

I stayed at both HI Hostels and prefered Northwest over Hawthorn. Although, Hawthorn was in a nice neighborhoodl Northwest and Northwest have nearby grocery stores, both offer secure storage, but each are distinctly different experiences,

I love this hostel, and I try to stay in it every time I go to Portland.

One of the best hostels I've ever stayed at. Loved the location, the house, the cat Bailey, the room, the bed.. everything! :) I guess my only complaint would be that it's sorta hard to do laundry what with the "only after 6pm" rule - usually I'd be out with friends by then. Also, the dryer didn't really do it's job to me, maybe something to look into? But those were two very minor details, I will def stay here again next time I visit lovely Portland.

Generally a pleasant and convenient place to stay. Bus stop right out the front for regular service into downtown and beyond. Staff member wasn't overly friendly when I checked in and it was the first - and only - hostel where I've had food stolen, but I would recommend this location above accommodation in the slightly dull downtown area. Hawthorne has a much more interesting vibe and better dining/shopping options.

The hostel was very interesting, in an area with easy access and interest of its own. The one drawback might be that there was no livingroom-type area. There was a large eating area but no common room except the out-of-doors which, in Portland, isn't much use in the winter (too wet). Otherwise a great place.

Everything is great except for security. You have to go to the back of t he house for that. Urgh. I realize I like small hostel better than large hostel. More personal and usually friendlier people stay at smaller hostels. Kitchen don't get as crowed as the large ones. Also the location--it's not in downtown, but it's a nice quite location in a very interesting neighborhood. Easy acess to downtown via #14 bus! Plus they offer bike for rent; $15 all day for the 1st day of use then $10 the following days. No bike shop can beat tha price! If I wasn't too spendy in Canada... I would have rented it for meself...
