This was a real treat! A beautiful old stone country mansion from the late 19th Century equipped with original adornments and details, some wonderful old paintings and fixtures, a ball room with mounted stags heads gives it a real sense of the grandeur enjoyed within its walls of the past. The hostel common rooms an dorm rooms themselves were just as they should be, clean, practical and functional with lots of space. The kitchen was great, providing around separate 8 ovens and hobs, all the kitchen ware you could require, lots of counter space and sinks and it was and totally spotless. It's also on a beautiful piece of land with huges gardens adjacent to mixed woodlands. We found all sorts of fantastic plants, fungi, lichens and trees including giant sequoias.

Check to see if a school group is staying when you are planning to go. They tend to overrun the building and take over everything. The place is beautiful.

Bathroom retained condensation and as such attracted a lot of moths and other insects

We didn't stay in the end, as we wanted to travel further onto the West Coast,.

We ( 3 adults, 2 kids) had a great stay in this hostel ! Staff was friendly , the family room was nice and you can't beat the location ! We will recommand the continental breakfast (bread, ham, cheese, yogourt, croissant, pain au chocolat, cereals, tea, coffee...)

The location is lovely, the house/lodge impressive. However, it's damn hard to find. The signage from the main road is misleading -- landed at the spa resort, twice. Especially when it's dark, there's a snowball's chance in hell to find the right track leading from the main road. Second, closing the main door at 11 pm puts a bit of a damper on everything. In order to get food or a drink you have to get down to Balloch, about 10 min drive, so basically a good night out is out of the question. If I remember correctly, Carbisdale Castle has the same policy, however, they open the main door every hour on the hour throughout the night to let latecomers back into their beds. Would it possible to implement the same procedure here?
