A little dirty, but good location. Not sure If I'd go back, especially for the price.

Location is a bit awkward. I recommend the Houhai area.

I had a lovely stay. It's in a great location, though a little tough to find at first. Clean, convenient, charming and a good value.

Why is there no discount if I am a HI member? Why don't I enter my membership No. when I book the hostel online and benefit by being a member? Is this only in China??

Not really a hostel in the traditional sense. It feels more like a budget hotel. There are no real communal areas, and there is no relaxed feel. The desk selling tours is useful, and they are able to book taxis to/from the airport. as well as having a small shop selling drinks and snacks which is handy. The location is 10 mins from Tiannemen Square and is ideal. Having a PC in your room with internet is handy, although the Pc is very old and slow, and the internet connection is obviously shared with a large number of others as it can take a long time to respond when uploading photos etc. Still, at 10 RMB per 24hrs, it is cheap

Nice facilities and good breakfast (Chinese) for cost! Suggestion - if someone is making reservation for large group, it would be appreciated the deposit was NOT spread across each person (i.e. reducing the cost/night/person rather than just for one person). This happened to me and I was left to either ask each person for money back or pay a higher amount.

The Far East Hostel was a great location. It was pretty cool to stay in the Hutong surrounded by all the other older buidlings. It was a side of Beijing I never really saw before. On the downside there was a problem with one of the local shopkeepers claiming that one of the foreign guests at the hostel had bitten her or something. The police came to sort it out and used one of the staff as a translator. I'm not sure what he did, but the guy didn't even try to help the poor girl that was accused, instead he continuously accused her of attacking the shopkeeper even as the girl kept trying to defend herself. In the end someone shamed the shopkeeper by accusing her of justtrying to get cash out of the guests and she backed down so when the girl offered her money to go away, she refused. That staff same staff member never apologized for his rude behavior either.

The hostel is pretty good if you don't have any requirment from the desk staff.
