Dirty, humid and moldy. We decided to move to another hotel when we saw the room.

Our room door had swollen with the rain so we could not close it - we had to wait 2 days before someone came to fix it - during that time the room was unsecure. There is the poorest HI i've ever been to - the kitchen was dirty, had very little equipment & was too small for the number of people supposed to be using it. Overall, the place is very run-down & i believe, relies on the fact that there's very little budget accommodation on the island so people will accept their low standards. There's also no library, TV or internet, (although the family have a computer for all to see but can't use) & regularly there was no-one around if you had any queries. A very poor adcert for HI International.

I stayed on Kona Tau for 17 nights, and really got to know the place, it's a good hostel to meet people and conveniently located not far from the main street. The staff are used to meeting tons of travelers, and therefore they're not very interested or engaged in yuo personally (hosts in smaller places are friendlier). However, they are professional and as I said earlier, it's a great place to meet other travelers. I would recommend it.

Facilities for doing laundry were inadequate.

Communal kitchen was very grubby. The host was polite enough but behaved as though he was doing his guests a favour rather than a service- but to be fair it may have been the language incompatibility?

No need for alarm clocks - the roosters take care of that Kitchen was not used by us because hygiene was not evident. Linen has mildew but that may be a tropical reality Main window onto patio could not be closed making late talkers an issue.
