The description says there is no lockout, but the staff wanted us out of the building during the day. The kitchen/cafeteria remains 'open' all day, but they don't want you to use it. There needs to be more communication with the guests from the staff if they're going to get upset over this sort of thing. We had a late afternoon flight out of Brussels, so after checking out, we decided to play some scrabble in the cafeteria to pass the time--because this is something you can do in practically every other hostel across Europe. The manager on duty came over and made it clear that we were not wanted in the building anymore because of the lockout, because they don't want people in the cafeteria and because we had checked out. It was an unfortunate end to what was otherwise a lovely stay.

No cooking facilities for guests. Only microwave was available and the kitchen was locked at 11pm.

It was warm and the window had to stay open. So mosquito's were all around. So i did not sleep that much. A anti mosquito net on the window would have helped.

I could not pay with my Master Card!! Because I lacked 4 euros in cash I WAS NOT ALLOWED TO PUT MY LUGGAGE IN MY ROOM before going to town to get myself the lacking 4 Euros from a cash machine. I am 65 years old and have been traveling for 49 years all over the world (alone) a.o. in youth hostels. Untill 19 years ago one had to carry lots of travellers cheques. The creditcard made an end to that chore. But not in Belgium. I left the young man at the desk 6 euros tip. What is this for, he asked. For service, I replied. But I am afraid he did not have any sense of humour. Mechelen is a beautiful town. Also my room was very high up in the building (4th floor) and we were asked not to use the elevator. On top of that it was not allowed to eat or drink in one's room, so for every cup of tea from my own thermosflask I had to walk up and down to the dining hall..... Which I did not, you will understand.
