The location is incredible and I can see the reason for a "rustic" hostel. Not the reason to pay it as a non rustic hostel. What's worst is that, being near to the river, the rooms are incredibily humid and cold. It's incredible the dirt of the plates (they are expected to be washed with detergent and dirty water, let dry and then cleaned with a towel, without washing away the detergent: Athabasca hostel too has no running water, but they don't have such a practice) Finally I see no sense in having running water inside the hostel but not using it: are we "playing the far west"?

Thanks for your comments Cosimo, I agree that this location is an incredible spot being the closest hostel to Crowfoot Glacier and Peyto Lake in the geographical middle of Banff National Park, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, we are located in a pretty special place without all the commercialism of the town hostels. Being in a remote location along the Icefields Parkway requires a team effort from the crew at Hostelling International Pacific Mountain Region. Everything that makes these hostels work has to be trucked in from Banff or Canmore our closest town for materials and supplies is 110km away. Being "Off-the-Grid" means that all propane and firewood must also be truck in great distances. All of these cost along with the "Frontline" and "Behind" the scenes labour costs in turn ends up being passed on to the individual price of a guest overnight. As you may already know an HI-Membership Card guest receives a $4.00 discount per night of accommodation bringing the high season summer rate down to $23.00 per person. When you compare this with the price of a single campsite next door in the Parks Canada Mosquito Creek Primitive Campground where a campsite with no heat, no sauna and no indoor kitchen facilities is $24.50 for a campsite and campfire the hostel for a member overnight in a shared dorm is $23.00 for the lone traveller it a savings of $1.50 per night with the bonus of a wood-burning sauna, indoor kitchen facilities with gas fridge, stove and well water. Unfortunately your stay coincided with my birthday and I was off-duty and off site and I had a relief manager filling in for me. With every guest arrival at the hostel I do a quick orientation tour, much like Sasha does at HI-Athabasca, where I explain where the outhouse is, point out the sauna and where you can dip in the creek, the common room with the fireplace and introduce the kitchen and how it works for boiling water, where you can change privately and in the dormitory cabin I explain the thermostat for the gas heating and where extra blankets can be found. By going only by your comments, I can only guess that maybe you didn"t get the full orientation tour or felt comfortable enough asking my relief manager for clarifications. My apologies Mark Hill HI-Mosquito Creek Wilderness Hostel Manager

It is what it is, don't expect a luxurious stay.

Antwort des Hostels:
That"s right Ben. . . The wilderness hostels are simply, simple. A warm bed and roof over your head with a place to cook and hang out with other travellers, that"s what we offer. . . Being in the middle of the Canadian Rockies and "Off the Grid" does not come with all the creature comforts of the city. If you like camping but not the hassle of a tent and rain wilderness hostels are a great thing, if you are looking for wifi, bar , restaurant and nightlife wilderness hostels maybe outside of your comfort level. It is what it is, and that is HI-Mosquito Creek Wilderness Hostel. Thanks for taking the time to review the hostel and thanks for coming out. Mark HI-Mosquito Creek Manager.

clean the saunna

Antwort des Hostels:
Sorry the Sauna wasn"t up to snuff. . . I am having difficulty finding good help to cover my weekends. While I am away on my weekends, I have tended to the sauna, it still is pretty rustic and having survived a small candle fire it is holding up pretty well. Mark Hl-Mosquito Creek Manager

I've stayed at many HI hostels in Canada before, and at Mosquito Creek about 4 years ago, and Rampart Creek last year. Mosquito creek was very disappointing this year. While the sleeping cabins were nicely outfitted and clean, the kitchen and lodge area were dismal and dirty. About half of the propane lights were non-functional, and all of the globes need cleaning to improve the lighting. The kitchen was dirty and could use some more or new cutlery and glasses. One of the fridges was not working and stank horribly, the other was barely working and also stank. The caretaker was not enforcing or encouraging groups to maintain the facility properly. Although my group enjoyed the weekend overall, Mosquito Creek hostel will not be one of the highlights they remember.
